Brooke - League Away 1st May
Redgrave Won by 2 Wickets
Brooke 200 all out (34.2 overs)
Redgrave & Bressingham 201-8 (38 overs)
Redgrave finally got their league campaign underway at Brooke on Sunday. Having lost the toss, Redgrave found themselves fielding. An opening partnership of James Shepherd and Trevor Musk immediately found their length as Musk had a wicket in his second over, Rob Tooke taking a simple catch via an inside edge. This brought Sturman to the crease, who looked in immaculate touch from the off, repeatedly driving Shepherd down the ground for 4. At 75-5 Redgrave looked to be well on top, but overseas professional Jumat had just arrived at the wicket, and heaved Mark Williamson for 6 fourth ball. He received valuable support from Manuell, before Will Dawson took a sharp chance at mid wicket off the persevering Williamson for 18. Jumat continued in his merry way however, with Dawson and Sam Cremnitz receiving the brunt of the punishment as Jumat blazed 10 sixes on his way to 91. Dawson proved his downfall though, as he and Cremnitz both picked up 2 wickets for their troubles. Brooke finished on a respectable 200, with Redgrave feeling well in the game at the half way stage. In reply, the opening partnership of Shepherd and Williamson looked to ease any nerves in the away changing room. With Williamson anchoring, Shepherd looked to hit anything off line, and fell for a quickfire 20, having hit 3 fours and 1 gargantuan six. Alastair Shepherd and Graham Kaylee quickly came and went to loose strokes, which brought a confident looking Dawson to the wicket. Williamson soon went though, getting a thin tickle to a Nudd outswinger, falling for 25. In came Tooke, and along with Dawson built a match winning partnership. With Tooke looking in fine fettle, Dawson was happy to give him the majority of the strike, and having hit 12 fours and 1 six, he fell to a clever slower ball for a breezy 66. Next in was Robbie West, having been the only one to bowl with any real control to Jumat, he stood stoutly with the impressive Dawson, before Howes cleaned him up with a searing yorker. Andy Austin fell to the pace of Jumat, followed by Musk, each only getting a single, leaving Cremnitz to try and see out the final 10 runs. Bravely Cremnitz fought on, despite receiving a nasty blow to the finger, as he and Dawson saw them home with 2 overs to spare, the latter finishing his tremendous innings with a lofted four over mid on to finish on 65*.
Garboldisham - Friendly Away 8th May
Game Cancelled
Saxlingham - League Away 15th May
Redgrave Won by 45 runs
Redgrave & Bressingham 159 all out (38.4 overs)
Saxlingham 114 all out (37.2 overs)
Redgrave continued their fine early season form with a convincing win over Saxlingham, thanks in no small part to a brilliant all round performance from Mark Williamson. Having lost the toss and been asked to bat first, Redgrave openers Williamson, and in particular Daniel Betts, looked to punish anything off line. Betts hitting one dreamy off drive for 4 off Mendham. The partnership had passed 60 at over a run a ball when Betts was cleaned up by Mendham with a full toss for an entertaining 21. Graham Kayley was next to the wicket, though he wasn’t to stay there long as the same bowler done for him with a peach for just a single. In came Will Dawson, who looked to be posivitive from the off, but despite hitting 2 fours early on, fell for 8, playing all round a straight one. With Redgrave at 88-3 they needed Williamson and Benji Spinks to stabilise matters, only for the woefully out of form Spinks to give gully catching practice for 1. Rob Tooke then came and went for a brisk 19, followed by Robbie West for 0. All the while Williamson was there, having passed a chanceless 50 and holding the innings together. With overs running out, Williamson tried to up the ante, but having rode his luck a little after passing a half century, was finally caught at mid wicket off the persevering Fleming for 71. The final few overs saw Trevor Musk, Sam Cremnitz and Dave Prince try and get to a competitive score, which they did so on a slow and low track, the innings coming to a close on 159 when Cremnitz floated one to mid on. In reply Saxlingham got off to a flier, with Snelling caressing the ball to the boundary at ease off both Musk and Cremnitz, as both sruggled to find their length, which is unusual for two high class athletes. It took the introduction of West for Redgrave to strike, clean bowling captain Creasey for 13, although that is more than he should have got, with Dawson dropping the easiest of chances. With Williamson now on at the Pavilion End asking questions immediately, Redgrave gradually assumed control, with Snelling holing out to Tooke for a quick 42. Williamson then bowled Killbourne and Neave, and finished with 5-2-12-3. Fleming and Kate then played intelligently to put on 30, only for the introduction of Besley, a late arrival to the game, to have both caught in quick succession, to add to his mindboggling catch earlier in the innings. Tooke and Betts both picked up 2 wickets at the end to finish off proceedings and wrap up a 45 run win, to keep up Redgrave’s 100% start to the league campaign.
Bunwell - League Home 22nd May
Redgrave Won by 5 wickets
Bunwell 150 all out (39.2 overs)
Redgrave & Bressingham 153-5 (30.5 overs)
Redgrave entered this top of the table clash full of confidence, and upon losing the toss found themselves fielding first. Opening up was the fiery Robbie West, and the steady trundle of Robert Tooke. West immediately found the surface to his liking with plenty of bounce, and was rewarded with just the third ball of the innings when Cannell hung his bat out to dry and was caught behind for nought. With all Bunwell batsmen struggling to get runs on the board, Tooke had Astow caught and bowled, quickly followed by top scorer Barnes for 34, out in the same fashion, this time by David Tooke. A clearly jaded James Shepherd then entered the attack, and despite looking a little leggy had the dangerous Parfitt well caught in the covers by West. The spin triplets of Mark Williamson, James Wilby and Sam Cremnitz then did a fine job keeping a lid on matters, each getting in on the act and adding to the wickets column. Cremnitz owed much to the safe bucket hands of Graham Kayley for his second wickets however, taking a steepler at short fine leg. With Daniel Betts finishing off the innings with a googly and a slower ball, Redgrave would have been more than happy chasing 150 on a lightning fast outfield. In reply Redgrave started in twenty20 mode, with Will Dawson smoting a monstrous 6 in the very first over. With Betts now looking to bat through, Dawson crashed 33 at over a run a ball, before running past one off the spin of Robbie. With Kayley being given the responsibility of the number 3 slot again, he again let the pressure get to him, this time giving Robbie a simple return catch. This was to be a blessing in disguise as Alistair Shepherd strode out and immediately peppered the boundary, hitting 4 fours in 16 off 11 balls. Williamson then joined Betts, and despite hitting some very classy shots, holed out to long on for 19. Betts on the other hand looked certain for a well deserved 50, but let the chat from behind the wicket get to him, top edging a rising delivery from Barber to fall for 48. This left Wilby and R.Tooke to see the side home, the latter hitting a booming 21 from 13 balls and confirm a well deserved victory.
Laxfield - Friendly Home 29th May
Game Cancelled
Caister - League Home 5th June
Redgrave Won by 312 runs
Redgrave & Bressingham 351-5 (40 overs)
Caister 39 all out (15 overs)
Redgrave entertained Caister in a clash of top versus bottom, and the match was as one sided as many suspected, with Will Dawson playing a fine hand. Upon winning the toss captain Dawson decided to have a bat first on a very flat deck. Redgrave continued with the successful opening partnership of Daniel Betts and Mark Williamson, however both found the going tough early on, with Tennant in particular swinging the new ball with unerring accuracy. After deciding attack was the best form of defence both started to find the boundary regularly, but Betts was to perish to a fine inswinger from Ali for 35, having hit 6 succulent fours, and end an opening partnership of 70 in 14 overs. Enter Dawson. What was to follow in the next 20 overs was nothing short of remarkable, as he took on all the bowlers without hesitation, seemingly middling every delivery either to or over the fence. Williamson on the other hand was happy to play second fiddle, mixing stout defence with glorious drives, and both brought up their fifty in consecutive overs, albeit at slightly different pace. With Caister continuing with a slip and a gully throughout, Dawson planted each and every bowler over his head for maximums at will, and soon brought up a magnificent 100 off 49 balls, and by the time Williamson was dismissed for 71, pulling a rank half tracker to deep square leg, the pair had put on 150 in 14 overs. James Wilby was next to join the fun, but despite hitting one gigantic 6, fell for 8 trying to hit the ball far too hard. With Sam Cremnitz now at the other end struggling for timing, Dawson created pandemonium among the fielders as he uncontrollably bullied every bowler, bringing up his 150 with yet another brutal hit. He eventually tried one hit too many, with Tennant picking up a deserved wicket as he miscued to midwicket, having hit no fewer than 10 sixes in an astonoshing 182 off 81 balls. There was to be no let up for Caister however, as David Tooke was in the mood and he bludgeoned a pugnacious 33 from 11 balls before being deceived by a double bouncer at the end of the innings, Cremnitz remained on a vigilant 5 not out, curiously not hitting out to preserve his mean average (hmm bit harsh... could be lack of talent rather than intent. Ed). Redgrave ending on a menacing 351-5. Caister knew they had a tall order, and once the returning star Robert Kayley, and the ever reliable Trevor Musk found the right areas immediately, they were struggling at 27-5 off the first 10 overs, as Kayley 3-14 and Musk 2-12 ripped the heart out of the top order in their 5 over spells. This brought debutant Rhys Meehan and spin guru Cremnitz on, with Cremnitz outstanding from his very first ball, posing questions with superb flight and guile. He picked up a brace thanks to a wonderful pair of hands from Betts that accounted for both batsmen. But it was to be Meehan to finish off proceedings, ripping out middle stump with the last ball of the 15th over to the very first ball he had pitched in the batsman's half, and wrap up a more than comprehensive 312 run win.
Kirkley & Lowestoft Railway - League Away 12th June
Redgrave Won by 8 Wickets
Kirkley & Lowestoft Railway 181-8 (40 overs)
Redgrave & Bressingham 182-2 (24.3 overs)
Redgrave continued their winning streak in the league with a clinical 8 wicket victory away to Kirkley. Redgrave were forced into a change from the week before as charismatic all rounder Sam Cremnitz had an injury to his spinning finger and was replaced by the burly Chris Cooper. Having lost the toss on a wet and windy afternoon, fielding first was always going to be tough. However new ball pair Robert Tooke and James Shepherd bowled with great control and kept the score under control, unfortunately though they were let down by some very poor outfielding, in particular Cooper, who showed a distinct lack of agility in spilling two simple chances. It wasn't until the 20th over that Redgrave struck with the score on 81, Cooper, to everyone's surprise, bowling Laws for 24. Three quick wickets followed after, as Cooper found a near perfect line and length to bag a couple more, and captain Will Dawson getting an lbw verdict. Cooper continued to weave his web, and ended with figures that were pleasing on eye, taking 4-17. With the innings now coming towards an end, quality death bowlers in Daniel Betts and Dave Prince were on, as Alastair Shepherd was quickly dispatched with having failed to find the wicket to his liking. Prince bagged a brace, with Betts picking up just the one, and Kirkley managed to scramble their way to 181 as Bailey batted sensibly to finish on 39 not out. In reply Redgrave started in positive fashion with Mark Williamson and Betts again assuming the opening role. However with the score on 21, Williamson top edged a ball that got big on him late, and was caught by mid on running in for 11. With the aggressive Cooper now at the crease Betts was happy to take a back seat and the big bruiser immediately found his range with some hefty blows. With no fewer than 9 bowlers given a trundle by home skipper Guy, they failed to find a breakthrough until the score was on 178, as Cooper, obviously feeling the nerves in the nineties, bottled a big ton and fell caught in the deep for a cavalier 98. This brought Rhys Meehan to the crease for his first bat for the club, and he and Betts finished off proceeding within 25 overs, Betts showing ruthlessness in finishing the game and batting through for a splendid unbeaten 65, to win him the man of the match accolade and take Redgrave to an efficient 8 wicket win.
